Mali: The improved septic tanks project
In Bagadadji, one of the oldest areas of Bamako, Mali, a project entitled "Improved Cesspools" was designed and is carried out on the basic premise that the local population should be involved in managing their own environment. Cheick Amala Tabouré is successfully mobilizing residents of Bamako's poorer quarters to finance and install household septic tanks instead of continuing the unhygienic and dangerous practice of disposing of waste water in open pits along public streets.

Australia: Chemicals Cleaner Production Project
By separating pipes which connect and mix effluent streams of chemical products, NCM has successfully reduced its production of sludge by 66%. In addition, the program effectively reduced the personnel time involved in solid waste handling; recovered two thirds of the factory space previously covered by large filter bags containing draining waste; and, minimized the amount of water required to dilute products and wash down the factory floor.

Mexico: Enterprising Technology Transfer: The Puerto Morelos Composting Toilet Project
Local environmentalists and concerned citizens of Puerto Morelos, Mexico teamed up with the ReSource Institute for Low Entropy Systems (ReSource)in 1993 to find a way to protect coral reefs and fresh water resources in andaround this coastal community. The partnership has resulted in the construction of hundreds of ReSourceComposting Toilets and soaring demand for this ecological technology in the Yucatan Peninsula.
