Amendments to Global Treaty Launched to Eliminate Nine Toxic Chemicals
Historic Additions to Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants Target Once Common Pesticides and Flame Retardants: August 26, 2010 marks the entry into force of amendments adding nine new chemicals to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals found in some common consumer products today. They are distributed around the globe and are known to be accumulating in human and animal organisms, endangering the health and safety of humans and the environment.

New Conservation E-Tool to Track Ttrade in Wild Animals and Plants
New E-Tool for Conservation: CITES Dashboards Identify Trade Patterns in Wild Fauna and Flora: What do the Amazon peccaries, the African hippos and the North American bobcats have in common? According to a new web-based, research tool of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), they are among the top ten mammal species being sustainably traded around the world for their skins. The Trade Data Dashboards, that were launched to mark the 35th anniversary of CITES, are a new, interactive way of viewing the wildlife trade data submitted by the governments of the 175 member countries of CITES.

CSIRO Scientists Say Ocean Waves Offer a "Massive Resource" to Meet Australia's Power Needs
Waves crashing on to Australia's southern shores each year contain enough energy to power the country three times over, scientists said on Tuesday, August 20, 2010, in a study that underscores the scale of Australia's green energy.
The research, in the latest issue of the journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, comes as the nation is struggling to wean itself of years of using cheap, polluting coal to power the economy and to put a price on carbon emissions.

Three Species of Birds from Latin America and the Caribbean Listed for U.S.Endangered Species Act Protection
Three species of birds from Latin America and the Caribbean will be protected by the Endangered Species Act under a final rule published in the August 17, 2010 Federal Register by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The birds that will be added to the endangered species list include the Andean flamingo, native to Andean regions of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru; the Chilean woodstar, native to river valleys in Peru and Chile; and the St. Lucia forest thrush, endemic to the island of St. Lucia in the West Indies.

UNEP Launches New Online Resource Centre to Reduce Environmental Impact of Relief Work
A new online resource centre developed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched on 19 August 2010 will help efforts to reduce the environmental impact of humanitarian relief and recovery operations around the world. The Resource Centre for Mainstreaming Environment into Humanitarian Action is the first online collection of practical information explaining how to integrate environmental considerations into humanitarian action.
