The Solutions Site is produced and edited by Janine M. H. Selendy, Founder, Chairman and President of Horizon International.
Janine Selendy is Founder, Chairman and President of Horizon International, a non-profit organization based at Yale University, which addresses health, environment and disease issues worldwide.  She also serves as principal editor and publisher of Horizon’s web-based Solutions Site. She is executive producer of more than 20 television documentaries, many of which have won awards and have been broadcast in many countries.  Her role as producer required research, knowledge of the subjects, writing, editing and fact checking with advisors as well as making co-production arrangements, in-country research and filming preparations, selecting talent and production teams and overseeing entire productions.  Her background in medical, scientific, environmental and other areas provides her with an appreciation of the interconnectedness of many subjects.

Horizon International focuses on finding and advancing solutions in the areas of health, the environment, and poverty alleviation. The organization is guided by its Scientific Review Board as well as hundreds of cooperating organizations and associates and has produced television programs, conferences and lectures.  One of the hallmark productions of Horizon International is the Solutions Site (http://www.solutions-site.org).  It is a collaborative program developed with United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Environment Program, United Nations Population Fund, UNICEF, the International Development Research Center, Yale University and Horizon's colleagues at Harvard. 

 

Selendy is also Producer and Editor of the multimedia components of Horizon International’s Magic Porthole Program.  She established collaborative arrangements with numerous museums including the Field Museum, aquaria including the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, government entities including NOAA, and produced the Magic Porthole Web site at www.magicporthole.organd the film “Magic Porthole: Discoveries in Coral Reefs, TV Series Preview of Footage Filmed in Bonaire,” an eight minute video, the “First Collector’s Edition” of printed educational playing cards, and the Magic Porthole First Sustainable Environment contest, among other aspects of the program. She is heading production of other     complementary printed materials, of the television series, books, and DVDs, games, among other aspects, further development of the Web site etc. The American Library Association selected Magic Porthole a “Great Web Site for Kids.”

 

Selendy is also currently Principal Project Editor for a book “Water and Sanitation-Related Diseases and the Environment: Challenges, Interventions and Preventive Measures,” to be published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. in 2010 with an accompanying DVD. 

 

Written by authorities from the fields of public health, medicine, epidemiology, environmental health, climate change, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and population research, this book will present the most complete treatment possible of the conditions responsible for water and sanitation-related diseases, the pathogens and their biology, morbidity and mortality resulting from lack of safe water and sanitation, distribution of these diseases and the conditions that must be met to reduce or eradicate them.

 

In compiling this book, Selendy heads a team of scientists and public health leaders including project advisor Barry Levy, Adjunct Professor of Public Health at Tufts University School of Medicine, Rita Colwell, Distinguished Professor at University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health, and many other professionals who are contributing their expertise to this volume.
