Horizon International is a not-for-profit organization based at Yale University. The organization works with numerous collaborators and cooperating entities to find and advance solutions. Horizon focuses on needs that it can most effectively address, prioritizing initiatives that are most pressing and that inform and inspire positive action. Quality, accuracy and thoroughness make results stand out as trusted coverage. This is made possible with the help of Horizon’s Scientific Review Board and Special Advisors.
Type of work: Horizon Associates, consisting of interns, volunteers and research fellows, help to find and share knowledge of successful initiatives through the Horizon Solutions Site at http://www.solutions-site.org/, Horizon’s Magic Porthole Coral Reef program including by providing content for its Web site at http://www.magicporthole.org/, television programs, (see http://www.horizoninternationaltv.org/), other IT outreach, and opportunities provided in conjunction with entities cooperating with Horizon International and through other avenues. Assignments are personalized in order to help associates to more fully realize their own potential while realizing tangible results from their work for the benefit of others.
Among the specific subjects that are the current focus of Horizon International are Global Climate Change, oceans and coral reefs and the interconnected areas of “water, sanitation and the environment.” Horizon’s Chairman and President, Janine Selendy, is compiling and editing a book “Water and Sanitation-Related Diseases and the Environment: Challenges, Interventions and Preventive Measures,” to be published by Wiley in 2010 with an accompanying DVD and other material. Components of this project will be ongoing. For example, plans are underway for a joint UN-Horizon call for “water and sanitation” solutions.
The Horizon Solutions Site is a collaborative program developed with several UN entities, the International Development Research Center, Yale University and Horizon's colleagues at Harvard that was launched at the UN in 1999. The Site presents case studies, articles and exhibits in the interrelated areas of health, the environment, population, and poverty alleviation. They provide knowledge of how an initiative was successfully brought about, encourage replication in whole or in part, and foster the development of new ones. The examples inspire action and provide knowledge for establishment of new projects and improvements of existing ones. By presenting examples of what has been proven effective to solve problems, the Solutions Site also encourages policy changes to strengthen support of successful programs and to support new projects. The Site also provides screened links with descriptions to 1,100 Web sites for research.
Further information about the Associate program can be found on the Horizon Solutions Site.
