Marine Scientists Appeal to Governments to Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions
Greenhouse gases are putting the world’s oceans at risk of becoming too acidic to support coral reefs and marine life, warned over 150 scientists who on January 30, 2009, called on governments to take immediate action to sharply reduce carbon dioxide emissions in a declaration drafted as a result of a United Nations conference.

Sweden and UNEP Work Together to Help Developing Countries Phase Out of Ozone-Depleting HCFCS
UNEP OzonAction created a new section of its website – the HCFC Help Centre -- in response to the need for policy and technology information about HCFCs and their alternatives. The new Swedish-UNEP cooperation aims to raise the awareness of industry and Governments in developing countries about commercially-available alternatives to HCFCs and aims to convince them about the benefits of adopting such technology.

Calls For Urgent Action To Protect And Restore Peatlands to Reduce Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Peatlands are wetland ecosystems that accumulate plant material under saturated conditions to form layers of peat soil up to 20m thick – storing on average 10 times more carbon per hectare than other ecosystems. Peatlands occur in 180 countries and cover 400 million hectares or 3% of the world’s surface.

China Closes Five of its Six Depleting Chemical Plants
China, the world's largest producer of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and halons, shut down five of its six remaining plants on July 1, 2007. This action puts the country two and a half years ahead of the Montreal Protocol's 2010 deadline for phase-out of the two ozone-depleting chemicals.
