NOAA Report Finds Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary Among the Healthiest Coral Reefs in Gulf of Mexico
Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary is among the healthiest coral reef ecosystems in the tropical Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, according to a new NOAA report. The report, A Biogeographic Characterization of Fish Communities and Associated Benthic Habitats within the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, offers insights into the coral and fish communities within the sanctuary based on data collected in 2006 and 2007. Sanctuary managers will use the report to track and monitor changes in the marine ecosystem located 70 to 115 miles off the coasts of Texas and Louisiana.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Announces Interim Rules to Reduce Overfishing and Rebuild Northeast Groundfish Stocks
NOAA Exploring Options to Ease Transition for Fishing Communities: NOAA announced interim fishing measures which take effect May 1, 2009 that protect the Northeast groundfish stocks most in trouble, while still allowing the fishing industry to target some healthy stocks as the fishery rebuilds. International Research Team Confirms Alps-like Mountain Range Exists under East Antarctic Ice Sheet
Project may help determine what caused ice sheet to form. National Science Foundation (NSF) calls project a capstone of NSF-supported International Polar Year deployments.
Flying twin-engine light aircraft the equivalent of several trips around the globe and establishing a network of seismic instruments across an area the size of Texas, a U.S.-led, international team of scientists has not only verified the existence of a mountain range that is suspected to have caused the massive East Antarctic Ice Sheet to form, but also has created a detailed picture of the rugged landscape buried under more than four kilometers (2.5 miles) of ice.
