Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak received the 2009 Stockholm Water Prize at a Royal Award Ceremony and Banquet during the World Water Week in Stockholm on August 20, 2009. “The results of Dr. Pathak’s endeavors constitute one of the most amazing examples of how one person can impact the well being of millions,” noted the Stockholm Water Prize nominating committee in its citation. The improved septic tanks project
Based on a careful survey of community domestic waste water — practices, needs and resources — Cheick Tabouré designed a low-cost improved household septic tank system, created a loan fund to enable households to afford it, and trained unemployed local youth to construct the tanks.

Enterprising Technology Transfer: The Puerto Morelos Composting Toilet Project
Local environmentalists and concerned citizens of Puerto Morelos, Mexico teamed up with the ReSource Institute for Low Entropy Systems (ReSource) in 1993 to find a way to protect coral reefs and fresh water resources in and around this coastal community. The partnership has resulted in the construction of hundreds of ReSource Composting Toilets and soaring demand for this ecological technology in the Yucatan Peninsula.
