CSIRO Scientists Say Ocean Waves Offer a "Massive Resource" to Meet Australia's Power Needs
Waves crashing on to Australia's southern shores each year contain enough energy to power the country three times over, scientists said on Tuesday, August 20, 2010, in a study that underscores the scale of Australia's green energy.
The research, in the latest issue of the journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, comes as the nation is struggling to wean itself of years of using cheap, polluting coal to power the economy and to put a price on carbon emissions.

Secretary Chu Announces Initiatives to Promote Clean Energy at First Clean Energy Ministerial
At the world’s first Clean Energy Ministerial, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced that the United States is helping launch more than 10 international clean energy initiatives. These initiatives will cut energy waste; help deploy smart grid, electric vehicle, and carbon capture technologies; support renewable energy markets; expand access to clean energy resources and jobs; and support women pursuing careers in clean energy. The new programs offer partners concrete, technical actions to promote economic growth while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. The initiatives will eliminate the need to build more than 500 mid-sized power plants world-wide in the next 20 years.

Secretary Chu Hosts First-Ever Clean Energy Ministerial
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu will host the first-ever Clean Energy Ministerial in Washington, DC, bringing together ministers and stakeholders from more than 20 countries to launch or join new initiatives that will accelerate the world’s transition to clean energy technologies. Government delegations will meet on Monday, July 19. On Tuesday, July 20, ministers, CEOs and other clean energy leaders will discuss their experiences and announce joint initiatives in a Public Forum. The meeting grows out of a Global Partnership launched by the leaders of the Major Economies Forum.

Global investments in renewables top non-renewables for 2nd year. UNEP’s Global Trends in Sustainable Energy Investment 2010, and REN21 2010 Renewables Global Status Report state that pro-renewable policies are critical to sector’s continuing strength and growth and that while clean energy investments show resilience in recession, the share of renewable energy continues to grow. The growth of wind power in China is a key feature of 2009 Energy Trends.
