In 2008, soaring food prices spread throughout the world, resulting in crisis in many developing countries. The 2008 COM+ Communication Award will be granted to a campaign related to the food price crisis. Issued by
COM+ and thus backed by its members, the award recognizes the role of communications in attaining sustainable development goals. The Award carries a prize of US$10,000 and will be presented at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in October 2008.

A successful campaign would have contributed to awareness of the food crisis and its impact on people throughout the world, while also enhancing understanding of the contributing factors, such as high oil prices, weather shocks, increased meat consumption, declining agricultural production, and greater use of crop-based biofuels. It may also have contributed to effective response to the crisis by articulating the pros and cons of possible actions and informing policy discussions and outcomes.

Call for Nominations

Nominations are invited through September 15, 2008. The Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research (CGIAR) is facilitating the 2008 COM+ Awards and nominations may be made via their website at http://www.cgiar.org/cgawards/index.cfm?Page=N&NominationType=11

All nominations received will be reviewed by a panel of COM+ members against the following criteria:

  • Campaign outcomes and impact such as audience reached, shift in behavior or change in policy or practice, achieved within less than one year of nomination; and
