Overview

"Too often a good idea never reaches beyond narrow borders and is virtually lost to the rest of the world. At other times, there is tremendous duplication of time, effort and funding in searching for answers. And, too often, answers are not found soon enough."

Remarks on the occasion of the Solution’s Site launching at the United Nations in 1999, by Horizon's Chairman and President, Janine Selendy.

The Solutions Site, created by HORIZON International (A.K.A. HORIZON Communications), provides readily accessible peer reviewed answers to problems in environment, health, population and development.

The purpose of this site is to provide a forum for the presentation of solutions to vital concerns in the areas of health, population, development and the environment. Initiatives are gathered through a number of different means, including direct user submissions, the efforts of partner institutions, and HORIZON's own research activities. The case studies not only encourage the replication of existing projects and provide information on how to do so, but also inspire the development of new initiatives.

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Environment Programme (UNEP), Population Fund (UNFPA), UNICEF, and Yale University are collaborating with HORIZON on the Site, and numerous other organizations are cooperating by providing case studies.

Individuals and institutions throughout the world are requested to participate with the HORIZON Solutions Site -- by using the Site, by submitting case studies on successful initiatives that can benefit others, and by taking part in our internship and research fellow programs.

Case studies are evaluated by Horizon's Scientific Review Board and other experts before being added to the Site. IDRC President Maureen O'Neil wrote: "The many well known and respected individuals who are part of your Scientific Review Board, provide the seal of quality that will reassure any serious user of web-based research material. Your site is proof positive that through partnerships we can make a lasting contribution to the world of knowledge."

The Site is for the benefit of people throughout the world from industrial leaders to micro-entrepreneurs, from agricultural experts to small scale farmers, from wildlife preservationists to marine ecologists, from family planning experts to public health workers, and from government decision-makers to educators.

About HORIZON

Horizon International is a non-profit organization based at Yale University that develops and advances solutions, especially in the areas of health, the environment, and poverty alleviation with the help of its Scientific Review Board, hundreds of cooperating organizations, Associates, television programs, conferences and lectures, and solutions sites on the Web. Horizon's home page is at: http://www.yale.edu/horizon.

The Solutions Sites are a collaborative effort of Horizon with the UNDP, UNEP, UNFPA, Unicef, the International Development Research Centre, Yale University and Horizon's colleagues at Harvard University. They present readily accessible peer-reviewed case studies, articles, exhibits, and resources including over 900 screened links with descriptions. The Kids feature of the Solutions Site is an engaging, interactive, multimedia feature. The URLs are:  http://www.solutions-site.org and http://www.solutions-site.org/kids.

Horizon covers the environment, preserving wildlife and endangered plants, reducing pollutants, reducing global climate change and acid rain, practicing sustainable, non-toxic agriculture; health, finding ways to reduce malnutrition, TB, malaria, dengue, and sexually transmissible infections such as HIV/AIDS, and unwanted pregnancy; and, development, finding means to meet economic needs with least harm to our planet and advancing technological innovations for the betterment of the planet. Horizon chooses ideas and initiatives that both inform and inspire positive action.

Horizon invites you to submit case studies and articles for consideration, to provide links to the Horizon Solutions Site, to assist with dissemination of information from and about the Site, and to become a Horizon Associate (intern, volunteer, or research fellow). All submissions are screened and not all submissions are accepted for posting. Horizon provides templates for submission of case studies.

Horizon International has launched the Preview of a multimedia, multifaceted project on coral reefs for youth entitled Magic Porthole™.  The Magic Porthole project has thus far been made possible by a Planning Grant from the National Science Foundation, financial support from Peter and Helen Haje and substantial contributions of talent and in-kind support.
