The charity was founded in 1997 with the remit of supplying educational resource to Africa (hence the name) and providing a basis for continued multilateral & bilateral aid through the promotion of development awareness in UK schools. Recently though we have moved in to the IT field and have begun to develop a unique software solution (Gemini) to enable schools around the world to work together online. We specialise in enabling schools in the Developing World to access the Internet and arranging online synchronous projects. It works together with other charities to harness and direct resources and expertise to wherever the Union recognises a potential for change and betterment. The Compass Project VSO works with volunteers to fight poverty in the world's poorest countries. Amicus Foundation and VSO together have developed the Compass Project, a training programme. This develops volunteers in their ability to identify the needs of local communities and formulate appropriate solutions, in situations where resources are very, very scarce. Express Link-Up Express Link-Up provides computer equipment for children in hospitals. With Amicus Foundation, it is networking together hospital schools, equipping them with safe internet connections, safe chatrooms where children can communicate with each other, and video conferencing. Helping children to continue their education while they are in hospital means that their transition back to school after illness is easier. Furthermore, effective and safe use of internet links reduces the social isolation that can so afflict hospital-bound children. Fauna and Flora International Through projects such as their International Gorilla Conservation Programme, Fauna and Flora International are working to build communities and environments that are economically and environmentally sustainable. Closer to home, Amicus Foundation has brought together environmentalists, politicians, celebrities and teachers in projects to educate our young people about conservation. These projects raise awareness of how humankind must live in harmony with other species in the environment we all share, so that all may survive and prosper. Crisis in Iraq The recent conflict has left the people of Iraq with a devastated country. Humanitarian assistance is urgently required and Trade Unions must respond. Amicus Foundation is working with Care International and Landmine Action to do something to restore to normal the lives of ordinary Iraqis. There is a great deal to be done.
