HORIZON INTERNATIONAL SOLUTIONS SITE

Opportunity Details:  Internships and Research Fellowships for a minimum of a three month period which can commence at any time and be fulfilled over an extended time. The work can involve research, writing, organizing, and creative multimedia, among other possibilities. Horizon provides a chance to publish or produce your work. Horizon will, as possible, assist with designing a research fellowship and obtaining funds. Assignments are personalized in order to help associates more fully realize their own potential and aspirations while realizing tangible results from their work for the benefit of others.

Type of work:  Horizon Associates will be asked to assist with research and preparation of case studies, articles and multimedia material and with outreach. They might work with the Horizon Solutions Site at www.solutionssite.org, the Wiley website and Solutions Site supplementary material for Water and Sanitation Related Diseases and the Environment: Challenges, Interventions and Preventive Measures, Published in Collaboration between Wiley-Blackwell and Horizon International, Horizon’s Magic Porthole Coral Reefs and Oceans program including by providing content for its Web site at www.magicporthole.org and www.coralreefs.co, and new videos or television programs, see www.horizoninternationaltv.org and YouTube under “jselendy’s channel” www.youtube.com/user/jselendy.  Participation might include assistance with Horizon-Peru.

Among the specific subjects that are the current focus of Horizon International are the interconnected areas of “water, sanitation and the environment,” Global Climate Change, oceans and coral reefs.

Horizon’s Chairman, President, and Publisher, Janine Selendy, is editor of Water and Sanitation Related Diseases and the Environment: Challenges, Interventions and Preventive Measures. The book explores the close relationship between sanitation, clean water supply and the environment to outline strategies for the prevention and eradication of water and sanitation-related diseases. Written by 59 experts from the fields of public health, medicine, epidemiology, environmental health, climate change, environmental engineering, and population research, this authoritative volume provides a thorough understanding of the interconnection among many factors linked to water related diseases, sanitation, and hygiene. Accompanying DVDs provide a further four hours of supplemental content as well as over 500 maps, tables and illustrations. A companion website (with the supplementary material) will include updates and additional resources.  Discussions are underway regarding the production of a lay version of the publication, an animated series, games and apps.

The Horizon Solutions Site is a collaborative program developed with UNEP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, the International Development Research Center, Yale University and Horizon's colleagues at Harvard that was launched at the UN in 1999.  The Solutions Site presents articles, case studies, and exhibits in the interrelated areas of health, the environment, population, and poverty alleviation.  They provide knowledge of how an initiative was successfully brought about, encourage replication in whole or in part, and foster the development of new ones.  The examples inspire action and provide knowledge for establishment of new projects and improvements of existing ones, and provide information for decision-makers. The Site also provides screened descriptive links. The Solutions Site was twice chosen by the Stockholm Challenge as runner-up among the 10 best IT websites in the world in the field of the environment.
