Plea for Help to Rescue Otters Being Killed by Cyanide Spill

From Pal Gera, President of the Otter Foundation, Hungary

Cyanide is killing otters living by the Szamos and Tisza Rivers in Hungary. An estimated 300-400 otters have already disappeared. This is a major part of the remaining population of the European otter we have struggled to preserve.

In our opinion, the otters ate a great number of fish polluted with cyanide and died in their nests. What makes this tragedy even worse is that this is the mating season for otters and we can surely declare that pregnant animals and new born otters have died as well.

We are observing the otters' territories, trying to detect the sick animals and heal them. We are already developing the Otter Ambulance and Otter Park in Somogy county and have rescued a small number of otters. The Hungarian government is not able to support this work because of the lack of financial sources. We have to continue our activities and we need funding and volunteers.
