Youth Conference in Sweden
Applications due Feb. 20, 2001 for Youth Conference in
Sweden in preparation for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable
Development, May 23 thru 27, 2001, Borgholm, Sweden.
Preparations are underway for "Rio +10" and as part of that,
UNEP and Sweden are sponsoring a youth conference.
The conference will give students worldwide an opportunity
to come
together, identify common grounds, and develop strategies for
participation in the World Summit 2002. Central elements include
innovative ideas for global co-operation and good examples of
sustainable development in connection with Agenda 21.
The Swedish Ministry of the Environment will select up to
250 participants between the ages of 18 and 25. The conference
is free; some travel reimbursement is available. The closing
date for application is February 20, 2001.

New Interns and Researchers
The work of HORIZON and the Solutions Site has taken a great
leap forward with the addition of a wealth of new Solutions
Site Reviewers and Interns, Research Fellows, Volunteers (Associates)
and from around the globe. To date, we have been joined by Interns
from Peru, Bolivia, Nigeria, Mozambique, the Philippines, Canada,
Greece, Ghana, Colombia, India and from the United States, while
discussions continue with many more. We will continue to seek
interns worldwide for the foreseeable future. Details can be

James Gustave Speth joins HORIZON's
Scientific Review Board
We are very pleased to relate that James Gustave Speth,
former Administrator of the UNDP and now Dean, Yale School of
Forestry and Environmental Studies, has joined the HORIZON Scientific
Review Board.
Dean Speth comes to Yale's environment school
from the United Nations, where he served from 1993 through 1999
as Administrator of the Development Program (UNDP), the principal
arm of the UN for the funding and coordination of technical
assistance and development. Prior to his tenure at the UN, he
founded the World Resources Institute in 1982 and served as
its president until January 1993. Following his tenure at WRI
he served as senior advisor to President-elect Clinton's transition
team, heading the group on natural resources, energy and the
environment.

The HORIZON Solutions Site
was formally launched at a special
event and accompanying two week long exhibit hosted by the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator James Gustave
Speth on April 14th in the Visitors' Lobby of the General Assembly
building. He praised HORIZON's twenty years of work with case
studies on solutions and emphasized the importance of using
the HORIZON Solutions Site especially for developing countries
and to empower poor communities to identify and achieve development
goals.

The Solutions Site is an integral part
of a new infectious diseases exhibition at the American Museum
of Natural History, New York. The exhibition, entitled "Epidemic!
The World of Infectious Disease", opened February 27th,
1999 and welcomed over 300,000 visitors.

In Memorium
Dr. David Rall
Dr. David Rall provided wisdom and guidance
during the many years he served on the HORIZON Communications
Board of Directors. His contributions to the understanding of
the vital importance of integrating heath and environmental
research and to bringing about environmental medicine to meet
the crucial health needs of today will continue to bear beautiful
fruit and honor his memory for generations to come.
The Members of the HORIZON Communications Board
of Directors deeply mourn his loss and extend their sincerest
sympathy to his family, his colleagues and his friends.
