Venezuela Ends Shark Finning, Creates Protected Area

Venezuela set forth a series of measures this week to protect sharks within its waters. Most significantly, commercial shark fishing is now prohibited throughout the 3,730 square kilometers (1,440 square miles) of the Caribbean Sea that make up the popular Los Roques and Las Aves archipelagos, whose pristine beaches and coral reefs make it a diving and fishing attraction.

 


New World Mangrove Atlas Highlights Importance of and Threats to Mangroves and Successful Restoration Efforts

The first global assessment of mangroves in over a decade reveals that rare and critically important mangrove forests continue to be lost at a rate three to four times higher than land-based global forests, despite positive restoration efforts by some countries.


Mngazana – Mangroves equal money (and honey)

Local solution to protect the Mngazana Estuary, regarded as the most important estuary in the Eastern Cape of South Africa with its 140 hectare stand of mangroves, is proving effective with four enterprises dependent on the mangroves which provide an incentive not to harvest.
